The Kuyasa low cost urban housing energy upgrade project in South Africa was registered by the UNFCCC CDM executive board on 27 August 2005.
This was the first African clean development mechanism (CDM) project to be so registered and the first CDM project that has gone through South Africa's designated national authority approval procedures. The project involves the provision of insulated ceilings, solar water heaters and energy efficient lighting in existing and new houses in Kuyasa in Khayelitsha, outside Cape Town and its estimated emission reduction is 6,580 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per annum.
